India’s 77th Republic Day
On January 26, 2026, India celebrated its 77th Republic Day with unparalleled pomp and national fervour, marking a momentous chapter in the tapestry of modern Indian history. The celebrations centred around the iconic Kartavya Path in New Delhi, where defence might, cultural grandeur and democratic pride were showcased against a backdrop of robust security and high international participation.
Republic Day commemorates the historic moment in 1950 when the Constitution of India came into effect, transforming the nation into a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic. Unlike Independence Day — which celebrates freedom from colonial rule — Republic Day celebrates the nation’s commitment to its constitutional ideals and the rule of law, reminding citizens of both their rights and responsibilities.

This year’s celebrations were infused with special themes of unity, heritage and self-reliance, rooted in the 150th anniversary of “Vande Mataram” — the patriotic song that symbolised the freedom struggle and now reflects India’s continued journey of progress and aspiration.
Grand Parade at Kartavya Path: Tradition Meets Modernity
The heart of the Republic Day festivities was the grand parade on Kartavya Path, formerly known as Rajpath, where thousands of spectators witnessed a stirring blend of military precision and cultural diversity.
The parade began with ceremonial honours and solemn tributes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the war heroes at the National War Memorial, laying wreaths to honour the sacrifices made for the nation’s security and freedom.
Following this, President Droupadi Murmu arrived at the parade grounds and unfurled the national flag, signalling the formal commencement of the celebrations with the National Anthem resonating through the crisp winter air.
The parade moved forward with a spectacular display of India’s military capabilities. Army regiments marched in perfect synchrony, showcasing both traditional formations and new tactical units. Among the highlights were debut appearances of advanced platforms such as the Shaktibaan and Divyastra artillery systems, and the cutting-edge Suryastra rocket launcher system, underscoring India’s strides in defence innovation and indigenous manufacturing.
The Indian Air Force flypast was another crowd-pleaser, as formations of Rafale, Su-30, MiG-29 and transport aircraft soared overhead, leaving trails of smoke in the colours of the national flag.
Equally striking were the animal and cavalry contingents — from Zanskar ponies and Bactrian camels to specially trained army dogs — all adding unique pageantry to the parade and symbolising India’s deep connection with its land and traditions.

Cultural Tapestry and Tableaux: Unity in Diversity
Republic Day is not merely about martial display; it’s also a celebration of India’s cultural ethos. The parade featured 30 beautifully crafted tableaux representing various states, union territories and central ministries.
These tableaux narrated tales of freedom struggle heroes, folk traditions, regional art forms, and India’s march toward scientific and technological achievement. The overarching themes — “Swatantrata ka Mantra: Vande Mataram” and “Samriddhi ka Mantra: Atmanirbhar Bharat” — captured both the spirit of independence and the pragmatic vision of self-reliance.
One of the standout cultural moments was the inclusion of classical artists and folk dancers who performed indigenous art forms, reinforcing the message that India’s strength lies in its unity in diversity — a mosaic of languages, traditions and beliefs woven into one vibrant national identity.
Global Presence: Diplomacy on Display
This year’s Republic Day held special diplomatic significance. For the first time, prominent leaders of the European Union — European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen — attended as chief guests, symbolizing deepening ties between India and the EU. Their presence underscored growing cooperation across trade, technology and geopolitical strategy.
Beyond Europe, global leaders and international figures extended warm greetings to India. Former U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated the nation, hailing the India-U.S. partnership as a “historic bond” and reaffirming the strategic relationship between the two democratic giants.
Messages of goodwill also flowed from diplomatic missions and Indian expatriate communities around the world. In places like Singapore, the Indian diaspora marked the day with flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural performances and patriotic celebrations that echoed thousands of miles from home.

Security and Public Participation
Ensuring a peaceful Republic Day required meticulous planning. Security agencies implemented robust measures across the national capital, with vigilant monitoring, vehicle checks and heightened surveillance to safeguard the event.
Yet, it was the enthusiasm of the citizens that defined the spirit of the day. From the throngs lining Kartavya Path to enthusiastic celebrations in state capitals, small towns and villages, the nation wore a festive look. Schools, colleges and community groups conducted patriotic events, while millions joined in flag unfurling and cultural performances that resonated with pride and belonging.
Reflections on the Constitution and the Road Ahead
As India marked its 77th Republic Day, the celebrations were also a time for reflection. The Constitution — adopted in 1950 — was not just a legal document but a living charter of rights, duties and democratic ideals. It serves as the bedrock of Indian democracy and a beacon for future generations to uphold justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.
Today’s observance was more than ceremonial spectacle; it was a reaffirmation of India’s commitment to its constitutional values, technological ambitions, cultural heritage and global partnerships. As the tricolour fluttered proudly across the nation and beyond, it symbolised not only where India has come from, but where it continues to strive — with unity, courage and an unyielding belief in the promise of its republic.
