Air India & Air India Express Add 166 Extra Flights to Patna for Diwali-Chhath Rush

Digital News Guru Tour & Travel Desk:

Air India and Air India Express will operate 166 additional flights to/from Patna between Oct 15 and Nov 2

As India approaches Diwali and Chhath Puja, a major uptick in interstate travel is inevitable—particularly for people returning to their home states. Recognising that surge, Air India and Air India Express have jointly announced the deployment of 166 additional flights to and from Patna between October 15 and November 2 (with some extensions) in 2025.

This is one of the more aggressive seasonal capacity expansions by Indian carriers, targeted at alleviating pressure on existing routes and offering alternative options to overburdened trains and buses.

Flight Plan & Route Breakdown

The extra 166 services are split between the two airlines in phases:

Period Airline Number of Extra Flights Routes / Notes
Oct 15 – Nov 2 Air India 114 Adds 38 flights each on Delhi–Patna, Mumbai–Patna, Bengaluru–Patna routes
Oct 22 – Nov 3 Air India Express 52 Introduces 26 flights each on Delhi–Patna and Bengaluru–Patna sectors

These additional services are in addition to the airlines’ existing schedules. Currently:

  • Air India runs 42 weekly flights linking Patna with Delhi & Mumbai combined.
  • Air India Express operates 14 weekly flights between Patna and Delhi / Bengaluru.

The idea is that not only will direct connectivity improve, but passengers can also leverage major hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru for onward and international connections.

Why This Move Matters

  1. Festival-Driven Demand

Diwali and Chhath are among the most significant festivals in many parts of India, especially in the eastern and central states. Many people who work or live in other states return to their native places to celebrate. Patna, being the capital of Bihar, is a major travel destination during this time. Airlines are responding to this predictable—and often overwhelming—spike in passenger movement.

  1. Alternatives to Overcrowded Rail & Road

Historically, special trains and extra bus services have been the default response for festive traffic. But in recent years, demand for air travel has also surged, especially among the middle class with means to pay for time savings. The extra flights aim to offer relief to those who prefer faster, more comfortable travel.

Moreover, for those unable to secure train tickets, flights become an attractive fallback option. The expansion also helps distribute passenger load more evenly across travel modes.

  1. Strategic Timing Amidst Political & Logistical Pressures

One interesting factor is that these additional services come at a time when Bihar is gearing up for its state assembly elections. The alignment of festive travel and electoral season likely amplifies the urgency to ensure smoother mobility.

From a logistical standpoint, airlines must manage crew scheduling, aircraft availability, ground services, slot coordination, and buffer for delays—all while handling the sudden spike.

Challenges & Considerations

While the plan is ambitious and welcome, it does carry several operational and traveler risk factors:

  • Booking surges and fare inflation
With higher demand, fares on Patna-bound routes may spike sharply. Some routes around festival timings have already seen price increases of 50% or more in past years.
  • Operational constraints
Organising extra flights on short notice strains ground handling, slot management at airports, maintenance schedules, and crew rosters. Delays or disruptions in one link can cascade across the network.
  • Airport capacity and congestion
Patna airport, along with hub airports of Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, must handle the elevated traffic load. Efficient coordination of arrivals, departures, passenger flow, and turnaround is critical.
  • Quality and passenger experience
Increased flights are only useful if they run on time and offer smooth connectivity. Mismanagement could lead to delays, cancellations, and crowding—negating the intended relief.

Wider Impacts & Symbolic Significance

  • Signal to other cities — If Patna sees success, other regions with states whose populations migrate seasonally might also see airlines boosting capacity during festivals.
  • Strengthening regional connectivity — This enhancement connects Bihar more robustly with national and international air networks, potentially improving economic and social linkages.

  • Pressure on other parts of system — Roads, public transport, local infrastructure (for example to/from airports) might face more load.
  • Public goodwill & image — The move portrays an image of responsiveness on part of the airline and government to citizen needs during high-demand periods.

What Travelers Should Do

  1. Book early — With limited seats, securing tickets well in advance is prudent.
  2. Check schedules closely — Some extra flights extend beyond November 2 (especially Air India Express from Oct 22 to Nov 3).
  3. Allow extra buffer time — Festival traffic and airport crowding may increase transit time to terminals.
  4. Be flexible with routes — If direct tickets are sold out, consider routing via hub cities like Delhi or Mumbai.
  5. Monitor airline announcements — Last-minute changes are possible during high demand periods.

This decision to launch 166 extra flights is more than just numbers — it reflects how airlines are adapting to seasonal, cultural, and political rhythms in India. If executed well, it could relieve major transportation bottlenecks during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
