The Supreme Court of Russia condemned the ‘LGBTQ+’ movement and termed it ‘extremist’.

Digital News Guru International Desk: The Supreme Court of Russia has banned the LGBTQ movement and referred to it as an ‘extremist organization’, and if any of the activities take place in support of this movement, it will be criminalized.

The case was filed by the ‘Ministry of Justice’ in the Apex Court of Russia, in which the Justice Ministry accused the LGBTQ community of “inciting social and religious discord,” and during the hearing of the case, the Justice Ministry was present at the court for the proceeding on Thursday when the decision came out.

It is also said that if any person comes out in support of the LGBTQ movement, he will also be referred to as an “extremist,” and the government will freeze his bank account. The situation is concerning as the human rights of the LGBTQ community are in danger as the Russian government also passed a law in July this year that banned doctors in Russia from carrying out ‘gender reassignment surgeries’.

Rights of the LGBTQ community in Russia

First of all, the LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning person. Although society has become more modern, many countries have now started showing their support for this community and safeguarding their rights in society. But in Russia, the situation is not the same as in the country; the people do not support homosexuality, which is causing discrimination, crimes, and violence against the LGBTQ community, for which the country has received international criticism.

In Russia, transgender people are also not allowed to change their gender, as the authorities have banned the doctors from conducting gender-transplant surgeries. The Russian authority has also banned same-sex marriage since 2020, and if someone does this, it would be illegal. In 2022, a survey was conducted in Russia in which 74% of people were not in favor of accepting homosexuality, and only 14% of Russians showed their support for accepting homosexuality.

Condition of LGBTQ community in other countries

The world’s largest economy, United States of America on June 2015 had removed all the restrictions on same-sex marriage and legalized it in all 50 states of USA. Recently, Cabinet of Thailand approved for the legalization of the same-sex marriage and by legalizing it the country is soon going to become the South-east Asian country to legalize it.

On the other side in India recently on October the Supreme Court has refused to legalize the same-sex marriage which shocked the LGBTQ community in India. The Islamic countries did not accept the homosexuality yet and consider this kind of relationship is sin, according to Sharia law in Muslims. In many Islamic countries, there is death penalty for involving in such kind of relationships like Iran, Qatar and UAE and many more.

United Nations on the rights of the LGBTQ community

Initially, when United Nations was founded, it did not discuss about the rights of the LGBTQ community but first time in 2003, Brazil presented a resolution to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights for the prohibition of discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation but the discussion was postponed.

Again in 2011, South Africa presented the same resolution of Brazil to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNHRC) which passed with 23 votes in favour and 19 against. But after so many efforts of many countries finally, in 2023, same-sex marriage is recognised by the 34 member states of the United Nations.
