PM Narendra Modi Launches Development Projects Worth Rs 33,500 Crore in Delhi

Digital News Guru New Delhi Desk:

PM Narendra Modi on 8 March 2026 inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several major infrastructure and housing projects in Delhi worth around Rs 33,500 crore. The large investment package aims to improve public transport, modernize government housing, and strengthen overall infrastructure in the national capital.

The projects are expected to boost connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance the quality of life for residents of the city. According to officials, the initiatives include the expansion of the Delhi Metro network, redevelopment of government residential colonies, and the foundation for new metro corridors under future expansion plans.

Expansion of Delhi Metro Network

A major part of the investment—about Rs 18,300 crore—has been allocated to expanding the Delhi Metro system, which is one of the largest and busiest urban transit networks in the world.

Prime Minister Modi inaugurated two new metro corridors that are expected to significantly improve connectivity across several parts of the city. The first corridor is the Majlis Park–Maujpur Babarpur section of the Pink Line, covering approximately 12.3 kilometres. The second is the Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park section of the Magenta Line, which stretches around 9.9 kilometres.

These new metro sections will benefit many densely populated areas in North and North-East Delhi, including Burari, Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar, Madhuban Chowk and Bhalaswa. The improved connectivity is expected to make commuting faster and more convenient for thousands of daily passengers.

In addition to the inauguration of these corridors, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for three new metro routes under Phase V-A of the Delhi Metro expansion. These upcoming corridors include the routes R.K. Ashram Marg–Indraprastha, Aerocity–Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal-1, and Tughlakabad–Kalindi Kunj, covering a total length of about 16.1 kilometres.

These new routes are expected to connect important areas such as South Delhi, central business districts, and the airport, thereby reducing travel time and improving urban mobility in the capital.

Redevelopment of Government Housing

Another major component of the development package involves projects worth around Rs 15,200 crore under the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) redevelopment plan.

Under this plan, several aging government housing colonies in Delhi are being redeveloped to create modern residential complexes and improved office infrastructure. The redevelopment projects are located in key areas such as Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, and Sriniwaspuri.

During the event, the Prime Minister also handed over keys of newly constructed flats to beneficiaries, marking an important step toward providing better living conditions for government employees. According to official information, thousands of new residential units are being developed as part of this project.

These modern housing complexes are designed to offer improved facilities, including better infrastructure, efficient energy systems, and modern amenities for residents.

What the PM said

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi said that the government is committed to building a “modern and developed Delhi.” He emphasized that improving infrastructure and connectivity is essential for the growth of the national capital.

The Prime Minister noted that the development of Delhi is closely linked with the image of India globally. As the national capital attracts international visitors, investors, and diplomats, better infrastructure and urban facilities are crucial for presenting a strong image of the country.

He also highlighted the importance of expanding public transport systems to tackle major urban challenges such as traffic congestion and pollution. With the addition of new metro lines and improved connectivity, authorities expect more residents to shift from private vehicles to public transport, which can help reduce pollution levels and traffic pressure in the city.

Benefits for Commuters and Residents

Experts believe that the expansion of the metro network will bring significant benefits for daily commuters. Faster connectivity between residential areas and business districts will reduce travel time and improve accessibility across the city.

The metro expansion may also encourage the use of sustainable transport options. Metro systems are considered one of the most environmentally friendly modes of urban transport because they reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Similarly, the redevelopment of government housing colonies will help replace outdated buildings with modern infrastructure that meets current urban standards. The projects are expected to improve living conditions for government employees while also optimizing the use of land in the city.

Boost to Urban Development

The Rs 33,500-crore investment is being seen as a major push toward strengthening Delhi’s urban infrastructure. With rapid population growth and increasing demand for transportation and housing, large-scale development projects are necessary to support the city’s future growth.

Government officials believe that these initiatives will not only improve public transport and housing but also create employment opportunities during construction and development phases.

Conclusion

The launch of development projects worth Rs 33,500 crore marks one of the significant infrastructure initiatives for Delhi in recent years. By focusing on metro expansion, modern housing, and improved connectivity, the government aims to transform the national capital into a more efficient, modern, and livable city.

As these projects are implemented over the coming years, they are expected to reshape Delhi’s urban landscape and provide long-term benefits for millions of residents and commuters across the capital.
