Digital News Guru Uttar Pradesh Desk:
Uttar Pradesh Tightens Holi Security
As the vibrant festival of Holi approaches, Uttar Pradesh has initiated one of its most comprehensive security operations in recent years to ensure that celebrations remain peaceful, safe and free of communal tension. Across the state—from the historic towns of Sambhal and Prayagraj to other districts—police and civil authorities have tightened surveillance, deployed additional forces, enhanced monitoring technologies and put in place preventive strategies to avert any untoward incidents during the festive period.
Multi-Tiered Security Deployment in Prayagraj and Beyond
In Prayagraj (Allahabad), which hosts numerous mass gatherings and public programmes as part of its traditional Holi festivities, the police identified more than 110 sensitive hot spots and nearly 3,900 Holika Dahan sites where significant crowds are expected. To safeguard these areas, authorities have deployed officers from the civil police, traffic units and para-military contingents, supported by local intelligence teams. These personnel are tasked with patrolling major intersections, crowded public areas and festival venues to promptly respond to any emergency.

Alongside increased personnel, the multi-tiered security strategy involves constant communication and coordination between district magistrates, senior police officials and rapid response teams, working collectively to anticipate and mitigate any escalation of disruptions during the festival, which runs through the first week of March.
Preventive Measures in Sambhal: Drones, Tarpaulin Covers and More
One of the standout examples of the state’s security strategy has been the preparations in Sambhal, where authorities have gone to considerable lengths to avert communal sensitivities. More than 10 mosques, including prominent ones in the town, have been covered with tarpaulin sheets ahead of processions to prevent coloured powder from coming into direct contact with religious structures—an action taken with the consent of local community leaders to maintain harmony.
In Sambhal alone, police inspected 1,215 Holika Dahan sites and mapped out 64 Holi processions, all of which will be monitored using drones to track crowds and maintain order. As part of these measures, district authorities have formed 27 dedicated security teams and stationed Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) units, along with around 200 recruit constables, to reinforce regular policing.
The tarpaulin covers and drone surveillance represent proactive steps that acknowledge local historical concerns while ensuring celebrations pass peacefully. Administrators have clearly communicated that such precautions are taken not to restrict festivities, but to uphold mutual respect and avoid any inadvertent tensions between communities.
Chief Minister’s Appeal and Public Messaging
In addition to on-ground enforcement, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has personally appealed to citizens to celebrate Holi “with dignity, harmony and respect,” urging people to avoid vulgar songs, unnecessary force while applying colours and harmful chemicals that could lead to health issues or distress. CM Yogi emphasised that the essence of Holi lies in joy, mutual respect and cultural celebration, reinforcing that safety and communal cohesion must remain top priorities during festivities.
The Chief Minister also highlighted that a sense of security and lack of tension or hooliganism reflect the true spirit of peaceful administration—what he described as a form of “Ram Rajya” in the modern context. During public addresses at events like the Bhakt Prahlad Shobha Yatra in Gorakhpur, he reiterated that law-and-order agencies will act decisively against any behaviour threatening public peace.

Technological and Tactical Enhancements
Beyond traditional patrolling and personnel deployment, police forces in Uttar Pradesh are making extensive use of drone surveillance, rapid response teams and special security grids to keep a watchful eye over urban and rural regions. These tools help monitor crowd movements, identify sensitive pockets, and enable quicker reaction times if situations escalate.
Such modernised monitoring—combining aerial views with ground intelligence—provides administrators and law-enforcement professionals with a real-time situational picture, which is especially useful during peak festival moments when public places, processions and Holi events draw large crowds. The deployment of drones also supplements traditional patrolling, allowing police to oversee multiple processions and mass gatherings without stretching limited resources.
Community Engagement and Partnership
Officials have taken care to involve community leaders and local stakeholders in security planning, particularly in sensitive areas. In Sambhal, agreements with mosque caretakers ensured that covering religious buildings would occur with mutual understanding, alleviating concerns about accidental colour splashes during processions that pass nearby. Such community collaboration has been a cornerstone of Uttar Pradesh’s approach, recognising that voluntary cooperation enhances trust and contributes to peaceful celebrations.
In other districts, similar engagement efforts are underway as part of pre-festival coordination meetings, where representatives from neighbourhood groups, youth clubs and civil society organisations are consulted to ensure messages about responsible celebrations are amplified at the grassroots level.

Balancing Festivity and Security
While the primary goal of these measures is to prevent disturbances, authorities have emphasised that Holi celebrations should continue freely and joyfully—provided participants respect public order and refrain from actions that jeopardise safety or offend sentiment. Police warnings are clear: any attempts to create disorder, provoke conflict or undermine communal harmony will result in swift and firm action under the law.
This balance between festive freedom and public safety reflects a broader administrative strategy to make Holi celebrations inclusive and secure for all sections of society. With enhanced patrolling, community cooperation, modern surveillance technologies and cohesive public messaging, Uttar Pradesh is striving to set an example of how large-scale festivals can be observed in an orderly, respectful and celebratory manner.
