Shooting in Dehradun
Dehradun — In a brazen and alarming incident on Friday morning, a property dealer and businessman was shot dead in broad daylight near the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) residence in the heart of Dehradun, raising serious questions about public safety and security even in areas close to top law-enforcement officials.
The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Vikram Sharma, a property dealer originally from Uttarakhand’s Bazpur region in Udham Singh Nagar district. Sharma also ran a stone-crushing and business operation and had been living in Dehradun in a rented accommodation.
The shooting occurred at approximately 10:15 AM near Silver City Mall on Rajpur Road, a busy commercial area where Sharma had briefly stopped after leaving a local gym. The assailants, believed to be three bike-borne attackers, allegedly opened fire on Sharma as he walked out, with at least three bullets hitting him. Despite reportedly carrying a licensed pistol for personal protection, he was unable to respond and died at the scene.

Crime Scene & Immediate Response
The execution-style killing took place less than 500 metres from the SSP’s official residence, a factor that has stunned residents and law-enforcement observers alike. The proximity to a high-security zone — where stringent police presence is usually expected — has made this murder particularly concerning for city authorities and the public.
Hundreds of passersby reportedly heard the gunshots and panicked as the assailants fled the scene in a hurry, weaving through traffic and disappearing before police teams could reach the location. Large numbers of Dehradun Police, including forensic experts, rushed to the site shortly after the attack, and began collecting evidence and CCTV footage from surrounding cameras to trace the attackers.
Senior police officials, including SSP Ajay Singh and IG Garhwal Rajeev Swaroop, were present at the crime scene and have taken charge of the investigation. A senior police spokesperson confirmed that no arrests have yet been made and that an extensive manhunt is underway, with security checkpoints set up in key areas across the city.
Criminal Background of the Victim
According to investigators, Sharma had a long criminal record, with over 50 cases registered against him across multiple states, including Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh. More than 20 of these were allegedly related to serious charges, including murder, complicating the task of determining the motive behind the killing.

Police sources said Sharma was “well known” to law enforcement because of his extensive case history and had even been out on bail at the time of the shooting. These details have led authorities to probe whether the murder might be connected to gang rivalry, a feud from past criminal disputes, or retaliation related to earlier offenses.
Preliminary inquiries suggest that Sharma’s alleged ties to criminal networks in Jharkhand could be significant to the motive, and police are in contact with their counterparts in that state to gather information and intelligence. A joint task force of Dehradun police and the Special Task Force (STF) has been activated to coordinate efforts in tracking down the assailants.
Impact on Local Law & Order Concerns
This murder is not an isolated incident in recent weeks. Local police records indicate at least three violent fatalities in just the last 11 days — including the shooting of a gas agency owner near Dehradun’s Tibetan Market earlier this week and an unrelated murder in the city at the start of the month.
These successive killings have triggered unease among residents, business owners and civic leaders, with many questioning the efficacy of law-and-order mechanisms in the state capital. One local shopkeeper told media that ordinary citizens now fear going about daily life, and there is a growing perception that criminal elements are becoming more emboldened.
Critics of local governance, including opposition political leaders, have singled out the frequency and boldness of such crimes as evidence of the need for immediate policy and policing reforms. “If violence can root itself near police headquarters and in heavily patrolled areas, what message does that send to everyday citizens about safety and state authority?” one local commentator asked in an editorial.
In response, the Uttarakhand state government has ordered a review of security deployments across urban centres, announcing the transfer of several senior police officials as part of a personnel shake-up designed to intensify the fight against rising crime. Whether these actions will significantly suppress violent incidents remains to be seen, but authorities have pledged a “zero-tolerance” approach to crime.

Investigation and Next Steps
Investigators are pursuing multiple avenues, including:
- Analysis of CCTV footage from Silver City Mall and surrounding areas to pinpoint escape routes and identities of attackers.
- Interviews with witnesses and Sharma’s close associates to discover potential motives or threats.
- Coordination with Jharkhand Police because of possible gang linkages and to track suspects beyond the state border.
Police officials have assured the public that they are pursuing all leads and will work tirelessly to bring the culprits to justice. Meanwhile, investigations are also focusing on any recent disputes, financial disagreements or rivalries that could have precipitated the attack.
A City On Edge
Dehradun’s string of violent crimes this month has put intense pressure on law-enforcement agencies and provincial government authorities to restore a sense of security in the region. With questions swirling about crime dynamics and enforcement preparedness, the tragic killing of Vikram Sharma — in a location so close to the city’s top police official — has become a symbol of wider concerns about public safety and the challenges facing urban policing in Uttarakhand today.
