Digital News Guru Assam Desk:
Himanta Biswa Sarma is all set to begin his second consecutive term as the Chief Minister of Assam after being officially appointed by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 12 in Guwahati, marking another major political milestone for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Northeast.
The BJP-led NDA secured a massive victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, winning 102 seats in the 126-member assembly. The result not only strengthened the BJP’s political hold over Assam but also established Himanta Biswa Sarma as one of the most influential regional leaders in Indian politics today.
NDA’s Landslide Victory in Assam
The 2026 Assam Assembly election proved to be a major success for the BJP-led alliance. The NDA crossed the two-thirds majority mark comfortably, winning 102 seats in the state assembly. Out of these, the BJP alone won 82 seats, while alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) contributed 10 seats each.

Political analysts believe the victory reflects strong public support for Sarma’s leadership style, welfare initiatives, infrastructure projects, and the BJP’s continued expansion across the Northeast. The election campaign heavily focused on development, law and order, road connectivity, investment, and welfare schemes targeting various communities in Assam.
The NDA’s victory also marks the alliance’s third consecutive term in Assam, showing the BJP’s growing dominance in a state that was once considered a Congress stronghold.
Himanta Biswa Sarma Chosen as NDA Leader
Following the election results, Himanta Biswa Sarma was unanimously elected as the leader of both the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA Legislature Party during a meeting held in Guwahati. Senior BJP leaders, including party president J.P. Nadda, congratulated Sarma and praised his leadership during the election campaign.
After his election as leader, Sarma met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Raj Bhavan and formally staked claim to form the new government. The governor later invited him to form the next government under Article 164(1) of the Indian Constitution.
The swearing-in ceremony on May 12 is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and several senior BJP and NDA leaders.
Sarma’s Rise in Assam Politics
Himanta Biswa Sarma’s political journey has been one of the most significant transformations in Assam politics over the last two decades. Born in Jorhat in 1969, Sarma initially built his political career within the Congress party and served in several important ministerial positions under former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
However, after differences with the Congress leadership, Sarma joined the BJP in 2015. His move proved to be a turning point for the BJP in Assam. Under his strategic leadership, the BJP expanded rapidly across the state and the Northeast region.
Sarma played a crucial role in helping the BJP form its first government in Assam in 2016 under Sarbananda Sonowal. In 2021, he became Chief Minister after the BJP retained power in the state. Since then, he has emerged as one of the BJP’s strongest regional faces nationally.

Focus on Development and Governance
Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Sarma said that his first term as Chief Minister was only a “trailer,” while the next five years would reveal the “full picture” of Assam’s transformation under NDA 3.0.
According to Sarma, the new government’s primary focus will be on implementing the promises made in the NDA election manifesto. Key areas expected to receive attention include:
- Infrastructure development
- Industrial investment
- Employment generation
- Border security
- Welfare expansion
- Education and healthcare reforms
- Tourism and connectivity projects
The BJP leadership has highlighted Assam’s improvements in road infrastructure, urban development, and law and order during Sarma’s previous term. Supporters argue that these achievements contributed significantly to the NDA’s sweeping electoral victory.
Historic Political Significance
Sarma’s return to power carries major political significance for Assam. According to reports, he is set to become the first non-Congress leader in the state to serve two consecutive terms as Chief Minister.
The BJP’s continued dominance also reflects a broader political shift in the Northeast region, where the party has steadily expanded its influence over the last decade. Sarma has played a central role in this strategy through the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), a regional coalition aimed at strengthening NDA influence across northeastern states.
Political observers believe Sarma’s leadership style, strong communication skills, and organisational abilities have helped him establish a powerful political identity beyond Assam as well.
Opposition Faces Major Setback
While the NDA celebrated a decisive mandate, the Congress and opposition parties faced another disappointing result in Assam. The Congress struggled to counter the BJP’s organisational strength and development-focused campaign narrative during the election.
Experts believe the opposition’s inability to present a united front and offer a strong alternative leadership contributed to the NDA’s comfortable victory. The election result has also raised questions about the future strategy of opposition parties in Assam ahead of upcoming national elections.

New Cabinet Likely to Include Experienced Leaders
Reports suggest that around 18 ministers may take oath along with Himanta Biswa Sarma in the new council of ministers. The BJP is expected to maintain a balance between experienced leaders and fresh faces while also ensuring representation for alliance partners and different communities across the state.
The new ministry is likely to continue several major development projects initiated during the previous term while introducing new schemes aimed at boosting economic growth and employment opportunities in Assam.
A Stronger BJP Presence in the Northeast
The BJP’s victory in Assam once again highlights the party’s growing strength in the Northeast. Over the years, Assam has become one of the BJP’s most important political bases in eastern India, and Himanta Biswa Sarma has emerged as the party’s key strategist in the region.
With a massive electoral mandate and strong backing from the BJP central leadership, Sarma now begins his second term with high expectations from both the party and the people of Assam.
The coming years will determine whether the NDA government can successfully deliver on its promises of faster development, economic growth, and political stability while maintaining the public support that helped secure this historic victory.
