Amethi Family Murder: 4 members shot dead, including School Teacher, Wife, 2 children

The Incident

In a tragic incident that shocked the residents of Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi district, a school teacher, his wife, and their two young children were shot dead at their home by unknown assailants.

The victims have been identified as Sunil Kumar, a government school teacher, his wife Poonam, and their two daughters, aged 5 and 2. The attack occurred on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at their rented house near Ahorwa Bhavani crossing in Amethi.

Police Response

The police are actively investigating the case, although the motive for the killings remains unclear. Superintendent of Police Anoop Kumar Singh revealed that investigators are considering various angles, including a legal dispute involving Sunil Kumar’s family.

In August 2024, Poonam had filed a complaint against an individual named Chandan Verma, accusing him of harassment and threats. This earlier case, filed under the SC/ST Act, is being considered a possible lead, but investigators are exploring other avenues as well, given that no clear evidence has yet emerged linking the case to the horrific killings.

The incident has led to widespread outrage, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath condemned the act, assuring strict action against the culprits. In a public statement, he expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice. He also instructed law enforcement to ensure a thorough investigation and maintain order in the region.

Sunil Kumar had been employed as a teacher at the Panhona Composite School since 2020, having previously served in the Uttar Pradesh police. This professional history has added complexity to the investigation, as the police attempt to determine if there could be any connection between his former occupation and the attack.

At present, no arrests have been made, and the police are appealing to the public for any information that might aid in the investigation. The horrific nature of the crime and the fact that it targeted an entire family has left the community in shock and heightened fears about safety in the region.
