Digital News Guru Punjab Desk:
Punjab politics witnessed a major development on Saturday after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Punjab Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora in connection with an alleged money laundering case linked to fake GST transactions and financial irregularities. The arrest came after day-long raids conducted at multiple locations associated with Arora and his business entities across Chandigarh, Delhi, and Gurugram.
The action by the central agency has triggered a fresh political confrontation between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government. While the ED claims it is investigating a large-scale financial fraud, AAP leaders have alleged political vendetta and misuse of investigative agencies.
Multi-Location Raids Before Arrest
The Enforcement Directorate launched coordinated searches early Saturday morning at several locations linked to Sanjeev Arora and firms allegedly connected to him. Officials reportedly searched Arora’s official residence in Chandigarh along with offices and properties associated with his business interests.

According to reports, ED teams reached the minister’s residence around 5 a.m., and several vehicles carrying agency officials were seen outside the premises during the operation. Searches were also carried out in Delhi and Gurugram under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
After hours of questioning and searches, the ED formally arrested Arora in connection with the ongoing investigation. Officials stated that the case involves alleged fake GST transactions worth more than 100 crore.
Allegations of Fake GST Purchases
The ED investigation reportedly centers around alleged bogus purchases of mobile phones through fake GST invoices. According to agency officials, fake bills were allegedly generated through non-existent firms based in Delhi in order to claim fraudulent input tax credits, GST refunds, and export benefits.
Investigators suspect that the transactions were part of a larger money laundering network involving round-tripping of funds from Dubai to India. The ED claims the scheme caused substantial financial losses to the government exchequer while generating illegal profits for those involved.
The probe is also examining possible violations under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and export-import regulations. Officials are reportedly scrutinizing financial records, property documents, and business transactions linked to companies associated with Arora.
Hampton Sky Realty Under Scanner
One of the companies being investigated in the case is Hampton Sky Realty Limited, which has allegedly been linked to suspicious financial transactions. The ED has reportedly attached assets connected to the company as part of the investigation.
According to media reports, the agency suspects that export transactions amounting to nearly 157 crore may have been used to launder money through fake trade practices and overseas fund transfers.
Officials believe the alleged network involved fabricated invoices, shell companies, and manipulated financial records to move money through international channels. The ED is expected to question several business associates and financial intermediaries linked to the transactions.

Political Storm in Punjab
The arrest has sparked intense political reactions across Punjab. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann accused the BJP-led central government of using central investigative agencies to target opposition leaders and destabilize elected governments.
Reacting to the ED action, Mann said Punjab would not be intimidated by “threats and pressure tactics.” Several AAP leaders described the raids and arrest as politically motivated, especially because the action comes ahead of important political developments in the state.
AAP MP Sanjay Singh and other party leaders alleged that investigative agencies were being selectively used against opposition parties while BJP leaders facing allegations were allegedly ignored.
On the other hand, BJP leaders defended the ED action and demanded accountability from the Punjab government. Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar claimed the raids exposed corruption and internal divisions within the AAP government.
Who is Sanjeev Arora?
Sanjeev Arora is considered one of the influential faces of the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab. A businessman-turned-politician, he previously served as a Rajya Sabha MP before entering the Punjab Cabinet.
Arora has been associated with the real estate and export industries for several decades. His companies have operated in sectors such as exports, infrastructure, and property development. He also gained recognition for philanthropic work in healthcare and cancer treatment support initiatives in Punjab.
Within the Punjab government, Arora handled important portfolios linked to industries, investment promotion, finance, and taxation. He was regarded as a key figure in attracting industrial investment to Punjab and promoting infrastructure projects.
His arrest is therefore being viewed as politically significant and potentially damaging for the AAP government in Punjab.

Cash Recovery Reports Add Drama
The case gained further public attention after reports emerged of cash allegedly being thrown from a luxury apartment during ED raids in Mohali linked to the broader investigation. Witnesses reportedly saw bags containing 500 currency notes being tossed from a high-rise building during searches.
The incident created a sensation on social media and intensified political debate over alleged corruption in Punjab. However, the ED has not yet officially confirmed the exact amount of cash recovered during the operation.
Bigger Political Implications
The arrest of Sanjeev Arora comes at a time when relations between the AAP and the BJP are already highly strained at the national level. Over the past few years, several AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, have faced investigations by central agencies in different cases.
AAP leaders argue that the BJP is using agencies such as the ED and CBI to weaken opposition parties before elections. The BJP, however, maintains that investigative agencies are acting independently and corruption cases must be investigated regardless of political affiliations.
Political analysts believe the arrest could have a major impact on Punjab politics in the coming months. The opposition is likely to intensify attacks on the Bhagwant Mann government, while the AAP may attempt to project the case as an example of political persecution.
Investigation Continues
The Enforcement Directorate has not yet released a detailed official statement outlining all the evidence collected during the raids. Officials said the investigation is ongoing and further arrests or summons may follow depending on financial records and evidence gathered during searches.
Sanjeev Arora is expected to be produced before a special PMLA court, where the ED may seek custody for further questioning. The case is likely to remain under close political and public scrutiny in the days ahead.
