Digital News Guru West Bengal Desk:
West Bengal witnessed a historic political transformation on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the first-ever Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state’s history. The swearing-in ceremony at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground marked the end of the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and opened a new chapter in Bengal politics.
Historic Shift in Bengal Politics
The BJP’s victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections is being viewed as one of the biggest political upsets in recent Indian history. For decades, West Bengal politics had been dominated first by the Left Front and later by the TMC under Mamata Banerjee. The BJP’s rise to power signifies a major ideological and political shift in the state.
The BJP reportedly secured 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, comfortably crossing the majority mark and ending the TMC’s long-standing dominance. The election results reflected growing support for the BJP across urban and rural Bengal.

Grand Swearing-In Ceremony in Kolkata
The oath-taking ceremony was held at the historic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several NDA chief ministers and senior party leaders. Governor R. N. Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Adhikari.
Thousands of BJP supporters gathered at the venue hours before the ceremony began. Security arrangements were tightened across Kolkata due to the high-profile attendance and large crowds.
The event also carried symbolic importance because it was organized on Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary, which BJP leaders described as a tribute to Bengal’s cultural identity.
Suvendu Adhikari’s Political Journey
Suvendu Adhikari’s rise to the top post has been one of the most remarkable political journeys in Bengal politics. Once a close associate of Mamata Banerjee in the TMC, Adhikari left the party in 2020 and joined the BJP. His political stature increased significantly after defeating Banerjee in the high-profile Nandigram Assembly contest in 2021.
Over the years, Adhikari became one of the BJP’s strongest leaders in eastern India and emerged as the face of the party’s campaign against the TMC government in Bengal. His aggressive campaigning and organizational strategy played a crucial role in BJP’s victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.

New Cabinet Reflects Social Balance
Along with Adhikari, five BJP leaders also took oath as ministers in the new Bengal government. The ministers included Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu, and Nisith Pramanik.
Political analysts noted that the six-member ministry was designed to maintain social and regional balance. The cabinet included representation from Brahmin, OBC, tribal, Matua, and Rajbanshi communities, highlighting the BJP’s strategy of broad social outreach in Bengal.
The party is expected to expand the cabinet further in the coming weeks.
BJP Promises “Sonar Bangla”
Addressing party workers after taking oath, Adhikari promised to bring “development, good governance, and law and order” to West Bengal. BJP leaders repeatedly referred to the beginning of “Sonar Bangla,” a slogan used extensively during the election campaign.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the new government and said Bengal would witness rapid development under BJP leadership. BJP leaders claimed the change of power reflected the people’s desire for political stability, industrial growth, and corruption-free governance.
Opposition Questions Election Process
The political transition has also triggered strong reactions from opposition parties. TMC leaders questioned the fairness of the election process and alleged irregularities in voting and voter rolls.
Mamata Banerjee called upon opposition parties, Left groups, and civil society organizations to unite against the BJP government. Meanwhile, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee alleged that millions of voters were disenfranchised during the election process.
Political tensions have remained high in several parts of Bengal following reports of post-election violence and clashes between rival party supporters.

Challenges Before the New Government
Despite the celebrations, the new BJP government faces several major challenges. Restoring law and order, controlling political violence, improving employment opportunities, and attracting industrial investment are expected to be the top priorities of the Adhikari administration.
The government will also have to address border security concerns linked to Bangladesh, improve infrastructure, and fulfill several election promises made during the campaign. Financial management could become another major challenge as the state balances welfare spending with development goals.
Political experts believe the performance of the new government over the next few years will determine whether the BJP can establish long-term dominance in Bengal politics.
A Defining Moment for Indian Politics
The formation of the BJP government in West Bengal is likely to have national political implications as well. The victory strengthens the BJP’s presence in eastern India and demonstrates its ability to expand into regions traditionally dominated by regional parties.
For the BJP, Suvendu Adhikari’s oath-taking ceremony was not just a political event but a symbolic milestone in its nationwide expansion strategy. For opposition parties, it served as a reminder of the BJP’s growing influence across India.
As celebrations continue among BJP workers across the state, West Bengal now enters a new political phase filled with high expectations, sharp political rivalry, and significant challenges for the newly formed government.
