NDMC Announces Maiden Night Market in Connaught Place
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has approved plans to launch Delhi’s first ever Night Market in the Connaught Place parking lots, aiming to transform a central city space into a vibrant late-night shopping and cultural hub before the end of the current financial year (2025-26).
Officials have completed preliminary groundwork, and the market is expected to be ready for visitors by March 2026. It will be modelled on successful international night markets like Thailand’s Chatuchak and Canada’s Richmond Night Market, offering a mix of shopping, food, entertainment, and social space for locals and tourists alike.

Vision & Experience
According to NDMC officials, the Night Market will reinvent the after-dark persona of Delhi’s central business district. The concept is part of broader efforts to provide global-standard public spaces, enhance urban life, and support local businesses.
- Location: The market will be set up in the parking lots of Connaught Place’s inner circle, a strategic and highly accessible area in the heart of the city.
- Operating Hours: Shoppers are expected to be able to enjoy the market until around 1 a.m., extending nightlife beyond typical city hours.
- Design: The area will feature temporary structures such as tents and fabric canopies rather than permanent buildings, creating a flexible “bazaar” atmosphere.
NDMC Chairperson Keshav Chandra and Vice-Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal highlighted the initiative as part of Vision@2047 — a long-term urban development blueprint aimed at elevating quality of life in the capital. They say the Night Market will not only enliven the city after dark but also strengthen revenue and promote small-business participation.
What to Expect
While detailed vendor lists and design layouts are yet to be released, Delhi’s Night Market is expected to offer:
- Flea-market style shopping: stalls and vendors selling handicrafts, fashion items, accessories, and more.

- Food and beverage options: informal eateries, street food stalls, and possibly food trucks serving popular local and global cuisines. (Historic plans referenced earlier proposed 50–60 food trucks in similar night food bazar concepts around Connaught Place and India Gate, offering goods till late at night.)
- Art and cultural performances: street entertainment and live acts to draw visitors and create a lively atmosphere. (Such features were part of earlier proposals for night food markets in the area.)
Why This Matters
The Night Market comes at a time when urban nightlife and experiential public spaces are gaining focus in Delhi and other global cities. By facilitating retail, food, and cultural activities late into the night, the NDMC expects to:
- Boost tourism and local business growth — attracting residents and visitors to spend more time in the city centre.
- Enhance the city’s night-time economy — providing opportunities for vendors and small enterprises.
- Support pedestrian-friendly urban design — making Connaught Place a safer and more attractive destination after dark.
The concept also aligns with recent changes to the Delhi Shops and Establishment Act, 1954, which now allows commercial establishments to operate in night shifts — a move likely to support the nightlife ecosystem around the Night Market.

Future of Nightlife in Delhi
The Connaught Place Night Market is part of a broader trend toward activating public spaces beyond traditional hours. Delhi has previously explored weekend food bazars and other night activities — some proposals also considered India Gate for night markets — underlining a renewed interest in making the city more lively and economically vibrant after sunset.
Urban planners and civic authorities are optimistic that the Night Market will serve as a template for future projects that celebrate culture, commerce, and community in India’s capital. By combining retail, entertainment, and food elements in a safe and curated environment, Connaught Place could soon become a bustling after-dark destination for Delhiites and visitors from across the country.
In short: Delhi’s NDMC is set to launch its first Night Market in the Connaught Place parking lots by March 2026, offering shoppers and tourists a late-night experience with stalls, food, and entertainment — marking a new chapter in the city’s urban nightlife and economic activity.
