Vijayawada–Singapore Direct Flights Resume After 7-Year Hiatus

Digital News Guru Andhra Pradesh Desk:

Direct flights between Vijayawada and Singapore

In a major boost to Andhra Pradesh’s global connectivity, IndiGo is restarting non-stop flights between Vijayawada (Gannavaram Airport) and Singapore (Changi Airport), beginning 15 November 2025. The new service — operating three times a week — marks a significant milestone for the region, contributing to trade, tourism, education, and commerce links with Southeast Asia.

A Tri-Weekly Flight Relaunch

The rejuvenated route will run on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, using IndiGo’s Airbus A320 aircraft.

  • Flight 6E 1029 departs Vijayawada at 10:05 AM and reaches Singapore at 4:40 PM, local time.

  • The return leg, Flight 6E 1030, takes off from Singapore at 6:10 AM, landing in Vijayawada at 7:45 AM.
The one-way travel time is approximately 4 hours and 10 minutes.

Strategic Importance: Why This Route Matters

  1. Filling a Connectivity Gap
The route had been inactive for seven years. Its revival reflects a clear push to enhance international access for Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada–Guntur–Amaravati region, which is growing as a commercial and educational hub.
  2. Economic and Trade Opportunities
Singapore is not just a tourist destination — it’s a global business gateway. Restarting direct flights is expected to boost trade (especially for exporters in pharmaceuticals, aquaculture, and other local industries), facilitate business travel, and encourage investment from Singapore into Andhra Pradesh.
  3. Education & Diaspora Linkages
Students traveling to Singapore for education and members of the Telugu diaspora will benefit from this direct connection. The timing for takeoffs and landings is designed to make onward connections via Changi Airport quite seamless, tapping into Singapore’s well-connected network.
  4. Tourism
The restored link is expected to generate a fresh wave of tourist traffic — both ways. For Andhra Pradesh, it’s a chance to attract Southeast Asian tourists to its cultural and natural assets. For Singaporean travelers, it opens up an increasingly dynamic region in coastal Andhra.

Government & Policy Support

The revival of this route hasn’t happened in a vacuum. According to reports, the announcement followed discussions during Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s visit to Singapore in July 2025, where local diaspora and business leaders emphasized the need for stronger air connectivity.

Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu publicly lauded the move, calling it a “significant step” in strengthening international ties for the state. The policy momentum has been aligned with Vijayawada’s ambition to evolve into a regional aviation hub, especially given the development around Amaravati.

Historical Context

This isn’t the first time there was a Vijayawada–Singapore flight. In 2018, IndiGo launched a similar route under Andhra Pradesh’s Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme. However, the service was discontinued in 2019 when the funding was withdrawn. The relaunch, after a relatively long gap, signals renewed confidence in demand and the airport’s potential.

Broader Implications for Regional Aviation

IndiGo’s move is also consistent with a broader strategy of expanding its network from second-tier Indian cities. The airline has simultaneously announced other international routes and is aggressively growing its footprint.

For Vijayawada Airport, this is a significant validation. Until now, its international operations have been limited. With Sharjah being one of the previous international links, the Singapore route adds a marquee Southeast Asian destination and bolsters the airport’s strategic relevance.

Challenges & Opportunities Ahead

Operational Challenges: Running a new international route always has risks — filling seats consistently, managing profitability, and maintaining optimal aircraft utilization will be key. IndiGo will need to closely monitor demand patterns, especially given the tri-weekly frequency.

Cargo Potential: While the A320 is not primarily a cargo jet, the belly cargo space on these flights could open avenues for small-scale exporters. The route could emerge as a preferred option to ship high-value or time-sensitive consignments, given the shorter connection and strategic hub at Singapore.

Future Growth: If the load factor stays healthy, IndiGo might ramp up to more frequent operations. That could further lower fares, drive more traffic, and encourage ancillary services (like charter operations or code-share partnerships).

Regional Development: Strengthened aviation connectivity can accelerate broader development in the Vijayawada–Amaravati region—spurring infrastructure projects, tourism circuits, and cross-border business collaborations.

What This Means for Travelers

For travelers from Vijayawada and nearby regions, this route is a game-changer:

  • Convenience: No longer needing to route through Hyderabad, Chennai, or other Indian hubs saves time and reduces travel fatigue.
  • Cost Efficiency: With fares starting under 9,000, this becomes a viable option for both business and leisure travel.
  • Seamless Transit: Singapore’s Changi Airport is a major global transit point — opening up affordable onward connections to Asia-Pacific, Australia, and beyond.

Conclusion

The relaunch of the Vijayawada–Singapore direct flight by IndiGo is more than just a route revival. It is a strategic catalyst for Andhra Pradesh’s international ambitions — economically, culturally, and socially. By reestablishing this bridge to Southeast Asia, the region stands to gain in trade, tourism, education, and connectivity. For the thousands of people in the Vijayawada–Guntur belt, this service isn’t just about flying overseas — it’s about opening a gateway to global opportunity.
