India’s Higher Education in Focus: NIRF 2025 Marks a Milestone Year

On September 4, 2025, the Ministry of Education unveiled the 10th edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)—arguably India’s most respected annual ranking of higher education institutions. The release spotlights distinctive achievements across universities, engineering colleges, and general colleges, backed by criteria including teaching, research output, graduation outcomes, and social impact.

IIT Madras Reigns Supreme—For the Seventh Time

For the seventh consecutive year, IIT Madras has clinched the top spot in the overall category—a testament to its enduring leadership in teaching quality, research, and innovation. Following close behind are IISc Bengaluru at number two and IIT Bombay in third.

This year’s rankings also feature IIT Madras leading in both the Engineering, Innovation, and newly introduced Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) categories. It’s also ranked second in the Research domain—just behind IISc Bengaluru.

Colleges: Delhi University’s Stellar Run

In the colleges category, Hindu College (Delhi University) retained its #1 position—continuing its dominance in undergraduate academia. Miranda House and Hans Raj College followed at #2 and #3 respectively, with Kirori Mal and St. Stephen’s rounding out the top five.

Delhi University’s impressive haul may be attributed, in part, to successful implementation of NEP 2020 policies which emphasize faculty development, infrastructure, and research innovation.

Category Highlights: Top Institutions Across Sectors

Beyond overall and colleges rankings, the NIRF 2025 lists category-wise top performers:

  • Engineering: IIT Madras continues its unbroken winning streak.
  • Medical: AIIMS Delhi emerged as the highest-ranking medical institute.
  • Management: IIM Ahmedabad outperformed peers.
  • Law: National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru led the law institutions.

The framework also spotlighted universities, pharmacy, architecture, and agricultural institutions, with IISc Bengaluru, Jamia Hamdard, and others leading their respective categories.

What’s New in NIRF 2025?

  • A Decade of Rankings

This year marks the 10th edition of NIRF, celebrating a decade of transparent benchmarking that has become a trusted resource for students, educators, and policymakers.

  • SDG: Education Meets Global Responsibility

For the first time, the NIRF has introduced a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) category, rewarding institutions that align education with global social and environmental priorities. IIT Madras topped this list, reflecting rising interest in socially responsible education.

  • India’s Research & Innovation Engine

IIT Madras’s top ranks across overall, engineering, innovation, and SDG categories underline a broader push toward research and global relevance. IISc Bengaluru’s strong show in research reflects the rising prominence of specialized institutions.

Why NIRF Rankings Matter

  1. Guiding Future Aspirants

For students and parents navigating India’s vast higher education landscape, NIRF provides an invaluable, data-driven compass—from engineering to liberal arts and beyond.

  1. Institutional Benchmarking

NIRF enables institutions to assess where they excel and where they need improvement, which in turn drives targeted investments in infrastructure, outreach, or research.

  1. Policy & Priority Spotlight

The inclusion of the SDG category signals a shift in national priorities—toward sustainability, social responsibility, and global citizenship.
