World freedom day : We have paid a huge price for the freedom that we have in our hands today and therefore, we must honor it.
Digital News Guru International Desk: The World Freedom Day, which is celebrated on 9th November every year, just to remind the importance of ‘liberty’ and right to ‘voice your opinion’ to all the people of world. Freedom is such a thing which should be given to every citizen of the world or the country.
In a democratic country like India where ‘Right to freedom’ is a fundamental right under article (19-22) which are guaranteed and protected by the constitution to all the citizens of India without any discrimination.
After so much development and modernization still there are some countries where such kind of freedom is not less than a dream. Countries like China and North Korea provides very limited ‘freedom of speech and expression’ and counties like Tajikistan and Turkmenistan do not promote ‘right to freedom of religion’. In many parts of country freedom is still a privilege instead of being a fundamental right.
History of World Freedom Day
World Freedom Day has been created in commemoration of the fall of Berlin Wall. The fall of the Berlin Wall referred as the ‘end of communism’ in both Central and Eastern Europe. During the end of second world war the Germany was divided into two parts, one part was- West Berlin and another was- East Berlin, in which West Berlin was occupied by the France, Britain and the America and on the other side East Berlin was controlled by the Soviet Union.
But at the end of second world war East Berlin declared itself independent country or country of its own. In both the countries East Berlin and West Berlin, people had different lifestyles. In west side economic conditions thrived and in communist East Berlin, the opposite happened. So many people of the east side get away from the difficult conditions of the communist leadership they began to fleeing from east side to west side. To prevent this fleeing the people of East Berlin built a wall to keep these citizens from defecting and to prevent their economy from collapsing.
A cold war began between the communist and the rest of the world but in 1989, it was announced that people of East Berlin would be allowed to cross the border. Consequently, more than 2 million people from East Berlin crossed the border and visited West Berlin. The fall of the Berlin Wall took almost a year. On 3 October 2001, the East Berlin and West Berlin unified into one city under one Government. US the then President, George W. Bush then declared the fall of Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, as World Freedom Day in 2001.

On this day we honour those freedom fighters who fights for freedom half a world away. There are many ways to celebrate like the former presidents of US, Barack Obama and Donald Trump declared national holiday on this day in US.
In the matter of freedom the journalism plays a very significant role as the ‘World Press Freedom Index 2023’ shows that Journalsim in 180 countries is ‘bad’ in seven out of ten countries and ‘satisfactory’ in only three out of ten countries. A world wide campaign ‘Write for Right’ encourage individuals to use their voice for freedom.
Today on this day we are talking about freedom but still there are many countries where a thing like freedom does not exist yet. Afghanistan a country, currently ruling by the Taliban where rights of women have been snatched where womens do not have freedom of education, freedom of speech and expression and many more which is a matter of concern in the view of freedom.
