Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2024: A Nation’s Drive Toward Nutrition Security

The month of September 2024 marks the seventh edition of Rashtriya Poshan Maah, a pivotal initiative under India’s flagship program POSHAN Abhiyaan (National Nutrition Mission).

This event is a testament to India’s continued commitment toward combating malnutrition, a critical issue that hinders human development and economic progress. The initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, focuses on fostering a nationwide movement for nutrition awareness, addressing both undernutrition and overnutrition, and ensuring that every citizen, especially children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers, has access to proper nutrition.

The significance of Rashtriya Poshan Maah cannot be understated. In a country where malnutrition contributes to approximately one-third of global child stunting and where anemia in women remains a serious concern, the month-long observance is not just an awareness campaign. It’s a call to action that brings together various stakeholders, including government departments, civil society, non-governmental organizations, and local communities, to focus on creating a healthier and more nutrition-conscious nation.

The Vision Behind POSHAN Abhiyaan

POSHAN Abhiyaan, or the National Nutrition Mission, was launched in March 2018 by the Government of India with a grand vision of making India malnutrition-free by 2022. While this goal has not yet been fully achieved, the mission’s contributions are still significant. It operates on a multi-sectoral approach, meaning it involves various ministries and sectors like Women and Child Development, Health, Education, Agriculture, and others. This holistic approach recognizes that malnutrition is not just a health issue but a broader socio-economic challenge that needs a comprehensive strategy.

The core pillars of the POSHAN Abhiyaan include improving nutritional outcomes for children, adolescents, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. This is done through key interventions such as encouraging dietary diversification, improving water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices, and strengthening maternal and child health services.

Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2024: Objectives and Theme

Each year, the Rashtriya Poshan Maah revolves around a specific theme that drives the activities and interventions during the month. The theme for Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2024 is expected to revolve around “Holistic Nutrition for All,” reflecting an inclusive approach toward nutrition, with special attention given to vulnerable groups in society.

Key Objectives of Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2024 include

  1. Improving awareness of malnutrition and its impact: A crucial part of Rashtriya Poshan Maah is building awareness at the grassroots level about the importance of good nutrition. Campaigns educate people on balanced diets, micronutrient deficiencies, and the long-term benefits of proper nutrition.
  2. Increasing outreach and engagement: The month focuses on reaching out to as many communities as possible, especially those in remote and tribal areas. Through village health, sanitation, and nutrition days, the government aims to involve Anganwadi workers, ASHA workers, and other grassroots health professionals in disseminating vital nutrition information.
  3. Addressing anemia and stunting: These two major issues remain a significant challenge in India. Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2024 will likely emphasize efforts to reduce anemia in adolescent girls and women, and mitigate stunting in children by promoting better antenatal care and nutritional interventions.
  4. Promoting locally sourced nutritious foods: There is a strong emphasis on the inclusion of traditional and locally available nutritious foods in diets, such as millets, pulses, and green leafy vegetables. 2023 was declared the International Year of Millets by the United Nations, and this influence is expected to continue into the activities for Poshan Maah 2024.
  5. Strengthening WASH practices: Nutrition and sanitation are closely interlinked. Rashtriya Poshan Maah will promote better water, sanitation, and hygiene practices to prevent diseases and infections that exacerbate malnutrition.
Key Interventions During Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2024

Several activities and interventions are planned for this month, including village-level nutrition drives, health check-up camps, awareness sessions, and kitchen garden campaigns. These initiatives are aimed at empowering women and families to make informed nutritional choices.

  1. Poshan Melas: These community-based nutrition fairs serve as a platform to disseminate information on health, nutrition, and hygiene. Anganwadi centers, schools, and panchayats organize these melas to engage families and especially mothers, promoting healthy feeding practices for infants and children.
  2. Home Visits by Health Workers: ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activists) and Anganwadi workers conduct home visits to monitor the health and nutritional status of children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. This personalized approach allows direct engagement and problem-solving in households.
  3. Use of Digital Platforms: In line with the Digital India campaign, POSHAN Abhiyaan utilizes technology to increase outreach. The Jan Andolan component, meaning “people’s movement,” emphasizes the use of digital and social media platforms to create a widespread impact. Apps like the ‘Poshan Tracker’ help in monitoring progress and identifying gaps in implementation.
  4. Promotion of Kitchen Gardens: Encouraging families to grow their own vegetables is an important part of the Poshan Maah initiative. Kitchen gardens not only provide access to fresh produce but also help in educating communities about the importance of dietary diversity.
  5. Anemia Camps and Health Checkups: Free health camps are set up to provide checkups for children and women. The focus is on anemia detection and treatment, as well as promoting iron and folic acid supplements for those in need.

Progress and Challenges

Since its inception, POSHAN Abhiyaan has made notable progress in addressing malnutrition. According to reports, stunting rates have declined, and there has been an improvement in antenatal care. The Poshan Maah campaigns have significantly enhanced community participation in nutrition-related issues. However, the challenge of eliminating malnutrition is far from over. India continues to struggle with the triple burden of malnutrition — undernutrition, overnutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies.

Some regions, particularly those with high poverty rates and poor access to healthcare, continue to lag behind in nutrition outcomes. Furthermore, behavioral change, a critical component of improving nutrition, remains slow in certain areas. Cultural practices, food insecurity, and lack of education also contribute to the challenges in fully realizing the objectives of the POSHAN Abhiyaan.
