Jon Fosse winner of  Nobel Prize in literature 2023 said “it took years before i dared to write again “

Jon Fosse, 64 year old Norwegian author has been awarded the Nobel Prize in literature by the Swedish Academy on October 5. The Academy hailed his ” innovative and prose which give voice to the unsayable”.The Nobel Prize is worth 11 million Swedish crown ($990,000 or €948,000) The Nobel Prize in literature, 2023 was awarded by the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, Mats Malm.

In the Earlier year the prize on literature was awarded to the French author Annie Ernaux in 2022 and was praised for ‘ courage and critical acuity’ and in 2021, Tanzanian novelists Abdulrazak Gurnah for his work on ‘colonialism and racism’. By winning the prize on literature, Fosse said, “I am overwhelmed, and somewhat frightened. I see this as an award to the literature, that first and foremost aims to be literature, without other considerations l”.

He also said to the media that he was ” surprised but also not” to have won. ” I have been part of the discussion for 10 years and have more and less tentatively prepared my self that this could happen”. Eleven laureates were awarded the Nobel Prize in 2023, for their achievements that have conferred the greatest benefit to the humankind.

The list of the NOBLE PRIZE  winners are – Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus, and Aleksey Yekimov are awarded in chemistry, Pierre Agostnini, Ferenc Krausz, Anne L’Huillier in physics, Narges Mohammadi in peace , Claudia Goldin in economic science, Katalin Kariko, Drew Weissman in physiology or medicine.

About Jon Fosse:

Jon Olav Fosse is a Norwegian author who was born on September 29, 1959, in Haugesund, Norway. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work “Give voice to the unsayable” in literature. About his personal life, he had been married three times. The first was with the Bjorg Sissel in 1980, but he divorced her in 1992.

Then he married Grethe Fatima Syed in 1993, and he again divorced her in 2009, and then at last he married Anna Fosse in 2011. His debut novel, Raudt, Svart (Red, Black), was published in 1983 and was influenced by the Nynorsk writer Tarjei Vesaas. Fosse’s first play, Og aldri skal vi skiljast (And we’ll never be parted), was performed and published in 1994. His works have been translated into more than forty languages.

He is the most performed Norwegian playwright after Henrik Ibsen. He has also been ranked number 83 on the list of the top 100 living geniuses by ‘The Daily Telegraph.” Since 2011, he has been granted the Grotten, an honorary residence bestowed by the king of Norway for contributions to Norwegian art and culture. By winning the Nobel Prize, he became the first Nynorsk writer to receive this prize and the fourth Norwegian to win it.

The founder of the Nobel Prize was the Sveriges Riksbank, which established the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in 1968 in memory of Alfred Nobel. It is an international award administered by the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden. It is considered the most prestigious award given for intellectual achievement in the world.

The first time the Nobel Prizes were given was on December 10, 1901, at the fifth anniversary of Nobel’s death. There are four institutions—three Swedish and one Norwegian—that should award the prizes. From Stockholm, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences confers the prizes for physics, chemistry, and economics; the Karolinska Institute confers the prize for physiology or medicine; the Swedish Academy confers the prize for literature; and at last, the Norwegian Nobel Committee based in Oslo confers the prize for peace.
