Slavery has existed in India since ancient times and has taken different forms. Manu in Manusmriti has defined women as a property or a slave of a man and said that “a woman must never seek to live independently,” which is criticized by the people now. In ancient times, there was slavery, in which slaves were described as ‘dasa’ and ‘dasi’ who served their kings or queens.

In medieval India, Muslim rule started, who started rule over India, by which slavery has risen much more. So we can say that the biggest example of slavery for us was the control of foreign powers over India, either its Muslim power, Portuguese power, or British power. India served as the slave of these powers for centuries, and we Indians were treated as their slaves. In modern slavery, there is forced labor, human trafficking, forced marriages, and child labor, which are rising in the present-day world.

The theme for this year is “Fighting slavery’s legacy of racism through transformative education.” Slavery is just a small word but has a deep meaning, and slavery is not less than an evil for the people.

No one can be happy in slavery, but after so many efforts, the old form of slavery has declined, but this new modern slavery is rising in the world, and mainly women and children are falling victim to it. While in our constitution, a fundamental right is given: “Right against exploitation (Articles  23–24). By giving education to the people about the negative impact of slavery, we can eradicate this evil.
