One person died due to a bacterial outbreak in Australia linked to saline products.

Digital News Guru Health Desk: A safety alert has been issued in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration after the death of one patient due to a bacterial outbreak linked to the saline product.

In Australia’s Queensland, there are total of 43 cases has been confirmed now. The situation can be serious, due to which a quarantine notice has been issued by the Medical Watchdog of Australia for saline products.

It is said that these saline products are contaminated with Ralstonia, a kind of bacteria which is usually found in water and soil. The Health Minister of Queensland, Shannon Fentiman, given a statement on Tuesday that the scientists of the Australian Capital

Territory (ACT) have identified these saline products, are imported from India and Greece. The Health Ministry of Queensland issued notice to all the hospitals and clinics to stop and remove the use of these saline products (InterPharma sodium chloride) immediately. If these saline products are from India, then this will create a new problem in the relationship of the two nations.

What is Ralstonia?

Ralstonia pickettii, a form of bacteria that was recently found in saline solution in Australia, is a Betaproteobacteria species that is found in moist environments such as the soil and riverbeds such as rivers and lakes. Ralstonia pickettii is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped soil bacterium that is an emerging pathogen in hospitals that are causing outbreak.

The infections are mostly due to contaminated solutions such as water, saline, and sterile drugs. According to doctors, this pathogen does not really infect people, and from 1990 the cases has been registered in which six patients died due to this pathogen were not medically fit and were suffering from medical problems.

What is saline product: The saline solution is a mixture of sodium chloride (NaCl) which is used for many medical purposes such as for cleaning the wounds, removal and storage of contact lenses, and also helps with dry eyes. It is a very common solution which are used in hospitals and clinics for medical purposes. According to Australian doctor, infectious diseases physician Dr. Paul Griffin, ‘the contamination is very rare’ in the saline.

About Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA): The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is a medicine and therapeutic regulatory agency run by the Australian government. This agency regulates all medical products except the controlled drugs, which are regulated by the ‘Office of Drug Control’ in Australia.

There are seven specialized statutory committees under the TGA that assist the agency on technical or scientific issues. The agency, along medicine, also provides medical devices such as medical gloves, bandages, x-equipment, and many more. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). The agency works under the control of the ‘Department of Health and Aged Cares’ of Australia.

  • The health minister also expressed her condolences for the death of a patient due to this bacterial outbreak.
  • The first case of this outbreak was found in mid-September in New South Wales, but now it has been found in Queensland.
  • The Chief Medical Officer of Queensland has confirmed that the bacterial outbreak is not harmful and does not spread from one person to another.
