National Police Sports Spotlight: All-India Police Weightlifting Competition Kicks Off in Amaravati

The Second All India Police Weightlifting Cluster 2025-26 officially commences today (October 13) in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, marking the first time this national-level police sporting event is being held in the city.

Organised under the aegis of the All India Police Sports Control Board (New Delhi) and hosted by the Andhra Pradesh Police, the five-day event (October 13–17) will feature competitions in weightlifting, powerlifting, and yoga, with categories for both men and women.

Venue & Opening Ceremony

The competitions will take place across two venues:

  • VIT Campus, Amaravati
  • Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU), Guntur

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 8:30 am at the 6th Battalion, APSP, Mangalagiri. Key dignitaries expected to preside over the event include AP Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha and DGP Harish Kumar Gupta.

Participants & Teams

A total of 32 teams from various state, union territory, and central police forces will compete, with 1,010 participants registered for the contests. Including support staff, officials, and other contingent members, about 1,500 individuals will be involved in the event.

This edition follows the inaugural All India Police Weightlifting event, which was held in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh in 2024–25.

Significance & Expectations

The event is significant for several reasons:

  • National-level platform for police sports: It provides an opportunity for police personnel across India to compete in strength, agility, and fitness disciplines.
  • Talent identification: Performances here may pave the way for recognition, awards, and motivation for further athletic development within police forces.
  • Greater visibility to police sports culture: Holding the event in Amaravati for the first time helps promote sports in newer regions and underscores the commitment of state forces to support athletic endeavours.

  • Inter-state camaraderie and competition: Given the competition includes both state and central police units, it fosters healthy rivalry and exchange among officers from diverse backgrounds.

Challenges & Considerations

Though the event is well planned, some challenges may arise:

  • Logistics & accommodation: With over 1,500 people to house, feed, and transport across two venues, operational coordination will be key.
  • Maintaining fairness & standardization: Ensuring consistent judging, equipment standards, and doping checks (if in place) will be important, especially for credibility.
  • Venue readiness & support facilities: The readiness of infrastructure at Amaravati and Guntur locations (e.g. weight platforms, locker rooms, medical support) will matter.
  • Ensuring wide participation: Some remote police forces may face challenges sending contingents owing to funding or travel constraints.

Challenges & Operational Aspects

As with any large sporting event, there are logistical and organizational pressures:

  • Accommodation & Transportation: Handling travel, lodging, and local conveyance for ~1,500 participants across two zones (Amaravati and Guntur) will require tight coordination.
  • Standardization & Fairness: Ensuring equipment standards, consistent judging criteria, and fair play across delegations will be crucial, particularly in strength sports.
  • Medical & Safety Support: Given the physical strain of weightlifting and powerlifting, medical teams and emergency response must be well-prepared.
  • Contingency & Backup Facilities: Any technical failures (platforms, weights, scoring systems) will require backups to avoid disruption.
  • Spectator & Media Management: Even though it’s a police sports event, media coverage, access, and public interest will play a role in visibility and success.

What to Watch During the Event

  • Medals by State / Force: Which states or police forces dominate strength sports in the police fraternity?
  • Emerging Athletes: Look out for surprise names or underdog performances that may raise their profile nationally.
  • Gender Performance Comparison: How women athletes fare in powerlifting and weightlifting categories may be of special interest.
  • Logistics & Venue Success: Whether Amaravati and Guntur host seamlessly will influence future bids for similar events.
  • Post-event Impact: How this competition translates into better fitness regimes, recognition, or institutional support in police forces across states.

Broader Context & Legacy

Police forces worldwide often hold inter-force sports and competitions to keep morale high, promote fitness, and build camaraderie. In India, such national clusters are still growing in scale and recognition. The fact that the weightlifting cluster is now annual shows maturity in organizing and sustaining sports culture within security services.

For Amaravati, this event is also a soft power showing — beyond state capitals and famous stadiums, newer cities like Amaravati are gaining capacity to host national events. It helps the city get on the map for future sporting, cultural, or civic gatherings.
