Digital News Guru Birthday Special: MC Mary Kom, born on 24 November 1982 in Manipur. M. C. Mary Kom, also known as Mary Kom, is an Indian female boxer. And Member of Parliament, Member of Rajya Sabha. She became the first boxer in India to win a gold medal in Asian Games, creating world history on 01 October 2014.

She is the only female boxer to become a World Amateur Boxing Champion for a record six times, having won one medal in each of the first seven World Championships, and the only boxer (male or female) to win eight World Championship medals. After his sixth world title in 2018, the Government of Manipur has awarded him the title of “Methoi Lima”.

Mary belonged to a low-income family where her parents, Mangte Akham Kom & Mangte Tonpa Kom, were farmers who worked in the jhum fields. She was Entitled “Magnificent Mary” by the International Boxing Association’ AIBA’ in 2008 and an incumbent member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, in 2016. She accompanied Manpreet Pawar as a flag bearer in the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Mary Kom was born in Kangtahi village in Morang Lamkhai in Churachandpur district of rural Manipur in India. He completed his primary education at Loktak Christian Model School and St. Heavier’s School. She went to Adimjati High School, Imphal for further studies but after failing the examination, she left school and then took the examination from National Open School. And then graduated from Churchandpur College which is in Imphal.

Reason of error in birth date of Marry Kom

Real birthday of Marry kom falls on 24. November it was cleared when she was in Jadhav hall . After winning the title at the World Women Boxing Championship here at KD Jadhav hall, May Kom shared that it was her birthday.Asked about the error in the birth date, Mary told the paper that it was a mistake done during the submission of her documents by her uncle.

“The mistake happened during my childhood. My uncle filled up the form and nobody noticed it that time. We were also not that popular, so we let it go as it is. However, the year (1983) was right.”

It will be interesting to see how the Government of India reacts to it. In all the official documents, her birth date mentioned is March 1.

It is reported that Mary only decided to try boxing after her idol Dingko Singh won the gold medal in the Asian Games. Her hero’s achievements motivated her, and Mary Kom’s Asian Games gold became a life-changing inspiration. But she is a trailblazer in more ways than one. Kom has combined fighting with being a Mother of three young children.

Mary Kom did not tell her parents before she started her training to become a boxer. Her father even tried to discourage her when he found out. Everyone in her town tried to discourage her efforts by ridiculing her.She was determined and even after facing strong opposition from her family, she proved everyone wrong for the first time in 2000 when she was given the Best Boxer Award at the First State Level Invitation at the women’s boxing championships in Manipur.

• Mary Kom won the gold medal in Asian Women’s Championships in the year 2005 and silver in 2008.
• She bagged the gold medal in AIBA Women’s World Championships in 2005 and 2006.
• Mary Kom won the gold medal in Venus Women’s Box Cup in the year 2006.
• She bagged a gold medal in Asian Women’s Championships in the year 2008 and 2010.
• She bagged gold in Asia’s Women’s Cup in 2011, held in China.
• Mary Kom won the gold medal in Asia Games in 2014, held in South Korea.
• Mary Kom won the gold medal in Commonwealth Games in 2018, held in Gold Coast, Australia.

Mary’s achievements are not only on the field but also off the field. She is the first woman sportsperson who has won a Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour. Mary was given this award in 2020.
