Digital News Guru Historical Desk: Today on 14 November the day when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born so we celebrates his birth anniversary as childrens day every year, because Pandit Nehru loved the children so much. Pt. Nehru, a person who played a huge role in the fight against British forces to get the freedom for India.

Pt. Nehru was a prominent politician as well as an author as he wrote many books including his autobiography which is named as ‘Toward Freedom’ in 1936. Pt. Nehru wrote this book when he was in the prison. He also served as the first Prime Minister of independent India.

About his early life– pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born in 14 November 1889 at Allahabad presently called as Prayagraj, a city which was referred as ‘Oxford of East’. His father’s name was Motilal Nehru who was a prominent lawyer and his mother’s name was Swarup Rani Nehru. His family was one of the wealthier family of that time as it is said for Pt. Nehru that he was born with a silver spoon.

Jawaharlal Nehru was the three siblings in which he was the eldest of them. He had two younger sisters in which his second younger sister’s name was Vijaya Lakshmi who later became the first female President of the United Nation General Assembly and his youngest sister’s name was Krishna Hutheesing who was the author.

Jawaharlal Nehru was studied at home until the age of fifteen and later graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge and became the barrister. Pt. Nehru was married to the Kamala Kaur in 1916 and gave birth to a girl child named Indira Gandhi who later became the first female Prime Minister of Indira. He died on 27 May 1964 due to heart attack and was cremated at Shantivan in the bank of river Yamuna in Delhi .

His Political Career– Jawaharlal Nehru returned to India from England in 1912 after becoming barrister. Here in India he started taking interest in the politics under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi. In 1919 he became the secretary of the Home Rule League and later joined the Indian National Movement with Mahatma Gandhi by participating in the Non-Cooperation movement in 1920.

In 1923 he was appointed as the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee. In 1928 he was protesting against the Simon commission but he was lathi- charged in Lucknow. Later in 1929 he elected as the president of the Indian National Congress of the Lahore session in which he declared the Purna Swaraj and for the first time in December 1929, he unfurled the tri-colour flag on the bank of river Ravi.

He also participated in the Salt Satyagraha movement in 1930 but he was put to jail. He had presided many sessions of Indian National Congress as Lucknow session in1936, Faizpur session in 1938 and 1946 session. He had also participated in all the Indian National Movement. After independence Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of independent India.

Interesting facts about Jawaharlal Nehru:-

  • Jawaharlal Nehru’s family was belong to the community of the Kashmiri Pandits.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru’s very first speech after becoming the Prime Minister which is confidential as one of the speeches till now is titled as ‘Tryst with Destiny’.
  • Pt. Nehru was also nominated eleven times for the Nobel Prize but did not get it.
  • There was also controversy about the relationship of Jawaharlal Nehru with the wife of the last viceroy of India Lord Mountbatten, Edwina Mountbatten.
